Located 26 miles southwest of Washington. Two battles were fought here: July 1861 and August 1862. The area is similar now to what it was then.
Separate self-guiding tours cover significant sites of each of the two battles. There's a walking tour with taped messages at Henry Hill, where First Manassas was centered. The areas of the Second battle are covered in a 12-mile driving tour. Interpretive signs are found at each stop.
Highlights: The Stonewall Jackson Monument is a dramatic equestrian statue near the site on Henry Hill where Gen. Jackson earned his nickname. The Stone House, once a tavern on the Warrenton Turnpike, was used as a hospital during both battles. Several farmhouses have been rebuilt. The 5th New York Zouave Monument commemorates the greatest loss of life in any infantry regiment in a single battle of the entire war. The Stone Bridge, on a foot trail, marks the area where the defeated Federals left the field in 1862.
